Special report: 85th Anniversary Celebrations

card_diamond.gifAt the Tuesday Morning Club AGM held today, Mildred Taylor and Maureen Howe were re-elected as Chairperson and Treasurer. Mavis Husbands and David Salisbury remain as Committee members. Unfortunately, Tony Wright stepped down, but Dorothy Caven was voted in to replace him.

Mildred thanked everyone for their support and continued attendance. Lots of activities have taken place over the past year, including bingo, chesse & wine, harvest, games and a holiday in Scarborough.

Membership fees are to remain the same. It was agreed by vote that regular members will be entitled to a Christmas bonus if they visit the Tuesday Club at least 12 times in a year.

Mildred thanked Peter Mowat for interpreting.

card_diamond.gifWe had a Halloween Party at the Centre on Tuesday morning, 25 October.

Halloween cakeSeveral members dressed up for the occasion wearing hats, masks or costumes. David Salisbury was dressed as a character from the film Beetlejuice and Mike Goodfellow was Wolfie, who looked pretty scary! The Centre was decorated with various spooky items, including a red-eyed cat, a bat hanging off the light fitting and a spider that came down from the ceiling every time it heard a loud noise!

A lovely Halloween-themed buffet was provided by Peter Barker from Huyton, and Betty Perrin made a cake specially for the party.

card_diamond.gifThe Tuesday Morning Club have recently been on a weekend break to Scarborough. 20 members went along for a four-day break from Friday morning till Monday evening.

While there we visited York. We had a day to ourselves in Scarborough and Whitby. We also visited other places.

We stayed in the Grand Hotel where we had dinner, bed and breakfast. Our coach driver was from TV Travel, Southport.

If you would like to come and join us, please do so. There are lots of other things happening throughout the year for you to join in. Maybe there might be something you like.

card_diamond.gifThis is a message from the Tuesday Morning Club at the Deaf Centre here in Southport. Just to tell you about a great day out the members from the club enjoyed on 2 August. We went to Rivington Barn for a Lunchtime Party Afternoon, mixing in with other clubs from the surrounding districts.

First we had a morning coffee then a 2-course meal with various choices to select from. Then we had entertainment, sing-a-long, dancing and a game of bingo. Finished the afternoon off with everyone joining in dancing.

After this we had to leave to get back on our coach with our friendly driver Keith from TV Travel. A great day out was enjoyed by all.

Why don't you come along and join in the fun. You will be made very welcome.

card_diamond.gifWe are sad to learn Mr John Furness passed away during the weekend of 22-23 January. Mr Furness was President of the Deaf Centre for many years and he was also a former Principal of Birkdale School for Hearing Impaired Children.

His funeral took place at St James Church on 2 February. The church was full, and the school was well represented by former pupils and staff. Miss Clark, who was Deputy to Mr Furness at the school, spoke about working with him for most of the 20 years he served as Principal. Some members of the Deaf Centre were also present.

The family went on to the Crematorium, and this was followed by refreshments at the Cambridge Hotel. Donations, in memory of Mr Furness, were given to the Alzheimer's Society.
